If you had computer problems over the past few years and you are an Office Depot or OfficeMax customer, you might be getting a check in the mail.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is refunding $34 million to Office Depot and OfficeMax customers.
These checks are going to people who paid for technical services and repairs for their computers.
According to the FTC, between 2009 and 2016 some Office Depot customers were told their products had virus or malware symptoms even when there were not.
Some of those people were then fooled into purchasing computer repair and technical services.
The services cost hundreds of dollars.
The FTC says more than 541,000 people were affected, which means when you do the math – $34 million divided by 561,000 people – the average refund check will be roughly $63 per person.
It’s not a big refund but the FTC says it does send a strong message to other companies to prevent similar scams from happening again.
