The Justice Department announced a national strategy to help cut the number of Native Americans murdered or reported missing each year.
Attorney General William Barr announced the “Missing and Murdered Indigenous Persons Initiative” on Friday at a reservation in Montana.
Barr said “American Indian and Alaska native people suffer from unacceptable and disproportionately high levels of violence” and “too many of these families have experienced the loss of loved ones who went missing or were murdered.”
Under the plan, the Justice Department will invest $1.5 million for coordinators at the offices of US attorneys in eleven states.
Tribal, local and state authorities can ask for specialized FBI rapid deployment teams to help them on cases.
And the DOJ will analyze its databases and data collection procedures to improve its missing persons data.
