As vacation season heats up and patience for sheltering at home wears thin people are starting to ask: Is it safer to fly or drive during the pandemic?
As with most things related to the coronavirus there’s no perfect answer.
Health officials say the risks of travel usually depend on your personal choices rather than the means of transport.
Health officials say stops to eat, drink, use the bathroom and sleep on long car trips add risk.
And for air travel, although the air in planes is filtered, the mask usage and hygiene of the other people you are flying with may be less than ideal.
Some health officials argue driving is a leg up on safety because you have greater control of your own environment regarding interaction with other people.
Whereas with flying you’re in a very closed environment.
If staying home just isn’t an option, here are precautions you should take whether you fly or drive.
First, wear a face mask when you go through drive-thru on a road trip and keep your mask on during a flight.
You may want to forgo drinking and eating on the plane since taking off your mask increases the risk of exposure.
Second, keep interactions to a minimum.
Use electronic check-in apps and pack your own food to help reduce face-to-face contact.
Lastly, wash or sanitize your hands frequently and sanitize surfaces that others may have touched.
