As parts of Europe and Asia look toward pandemic recovery, Latin America has now become the center of the global coronavirus outbreak.
The director of the Pan American Health Organization says the region has surpassed Europe and the US in daily infection numbers.
Tuesday Mexico saw its largest single-day rises in both new Covid-19 cases and deaths since the start of the outbreak.
Tuesday evening Mexican health officials reported 3,455 new cases for a total of 74,560.
Authorities also reported an additional 501 deaths bringing the total to 8,134.
This marks the first time Mexico has reported over 500 coronavirus deaths in one day.
Meanwhile Peru has the second-highest number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Latin America.
Tuesday Peru reported 5,000 new cases.
Brazil has the second-highest number of confirmed cases worldwide, second only to the US.
Daily death tolls in Brazil this week are surpassing those of the US.
Monday Brazil recorded 807 coronavirus deaths while the US reported 498.
