A series of threats have been reported at Los Angeles County schools since the November 14 shooting at Saugus high school, where a student fatally shot two students before killing himself.
But authorities say a threat to shoot up a school was thwarted thanks to kids speaking up.
Students at Animo Mae Jemison charter middle school told teachers and administrators they overheard a thirteen-year-old boy threatening to shoot students and staff members.
When investigators searched the suspect’s home, they found this: an AR-15 assault rifle.
They seized about 100 rounds of ammunition, a hand-drawn map of the school and a list of names of students and staff members.
The boy was charged with criminal threats.
Other charges may be filed.
The school issued a news release that said “our students did everything right by raising concerns with adults.”
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department also released a statement that said “we want to thank everyone involved because they did all the right things and because of that, we were able to prevent a possible tragedy.”
