Some recent protests have centered around defunding or otherwise reforming police.
On Thursday San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced new police reforms.
As part of the plan, San Francisco police department officers would stop responding to issues like disputes between neighbors, reports about homeless people and school discipline interventions.
She said the new reforms would strengthen accountability, address police bias and include plans to demilitarize the police and promote economic justice.
San Francisco has already banned choke holds and requires officers to intervene in cases of excessive force.
However such changes are not being welcomed everywhere.
Ten South Florida police officers have resigned from their city’s SWAT unit saying they felt unsafely restrained by politics.
Last Tuesday the officers sent a letter to the Hallandale Beach police chief.
They said they were often times restrained in their tactics by politics, to the extent that the safety of dogs were placed over the safety of team members.
They also said they were “minimally equipped” and “under trained.”
They also expressed displeasure with their command staff taking a knee with activists during a demonstration last Monday.
