The White House is struggling to deal with the fallout after President Trump’s former Defense Secretary accused him of dividing the nation in a time of crisis.
Retired four-star Marine General James Mattis said Tromp “does not even pretend to try” to bring Americans together and “we are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership.”
The White House ignore Mattis’s criticism but but sources say the White House also knows Mattis’s condemnation of Trump could have consequences.
Mattis is widely revered by both Republicans and Democrats and within military circles.
And he’s not the only former top military officials denouncing Trump.
Retired four-star Marine General John Allen said he was stunned by Trump’s photo outside of a church showing him holding up a Bible.
The former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mike Mullen said he was sicked to see protesters cleared out of the way at the White House and he couldn’t stay silent any longer.
Even the President’s former chief of staff John Kelly, also a retired four-star general, is disputing Trump’s claim he fired Mattis.
Most Republicans have tried to avoid commenting on what Mattis said but Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski called his rebuke “necessary and overdue.”
And she told CNN she is struggling with whether to support from in November.
Trump remains behind closed doors as the fences outside the White House were fortifed and the park in front of the White House has been closed, an 8 foot fence was erected and officers from multiple federal agencies are now patrolling Washington, DC.”
