The US Surgeon General warns the coronavirus pandemic will get even worse in potential hotspots such as Detroit, Chicago and New Orleans.
In Louisiana the confirmed death toll jumped more than 40% overnight to 119.
And officials admit they are facing a critical shortage of medical supplies.
Long lines of cars wind through drive-thru testing sites set up in and around the city of New Orleans.
But the drive-thru sites can only test 250 people per day and most reach their limit in two hours.
So far more than 21,000 people have been tested statewide.
The governor has said hospitals could run out of bed space and ventilators by early April.
Medical teams are preparing to turn the convention center into a makeshift hospital.
State officials say 120 beds will be ready to take coronavirus patients by this weekend.
If you remember 15 years ago the New Orleans convention center was the site of despair and grief in the days after Hurricane Katrina.
For many it brings back the emotional memories to see the building once again at the center of another crisis.
