Former Georgia police officer Robert “Chip” Olsen received his sentence Friday in the death of 26-year-old Afghanistan war veteran Anthony Hill.
Police say Olsen was responding to a report of a naked man acting deranged.
Police say when Hill saw Olsen, he ran at him, Olsen told him to stop, drew his gun and fired two shots.
During closing arguments, the prosecution claimed Olsen did not follow protocol for using force, saying he could’ve used a baton on Hill since Hill was mentally ill, naked and unarmed.
Last month the jury acquitted Olsen of murder but found him guilty of aggravated assault, making a false statement and two counts of violation of oath.
The judge sentenced him to twenty years but to serve the first twelve years in prison.
She also ruled that Olsen is never allowed to ever work in law enforcement again, he cannot possess a firearm and he cannot profit from any event in this case including television, radio or book deals.
