The US Food and Drug Administration has given emergency approval to a new Covid-19 saliva test.
It’s a method already used by the NBA.
It’s called Saliva Direct.
The test detects current Covid-19 infections and is promoted as quick and inexpensive.
A team of leaders from Yale’s School of Public Health developed the test.
A health official from the school says it’s going to be more safer and comfortable to use and that is going to increase testing capacity.
Researchers expect labs to charge about 10-dollars per sample, with results provided in under three hours.
Yale researchers say labs could get equipment and perform the test using their instructions.
It doesn’t require any of Yale’s equipment and can use a variety of available testing materials.
The FDA has authorized four other coronavirus tests which use saliva samples.
