Former vice president Joe Biden says he shouldn’t have tried to be a “wise guy” when speaking about African American voters.
He faces criticism for a controversial comment he made Friday in an interview with radio host Charlamagne tha God on “The Breakfast Club.”
During the interview Biden said “If you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black.”
Late on Friday afternoon Biden backtracked on that statement on a call with the US Black Chamber of Commerce.
Biden says he believes he needs African Americans to vote for him in order to win the presidency.
He says he wants to earn that support and doesn’t take it for granted.
Friday night in an interview with CNN Charlemagne said that the former vice president’s comments were “just a shock coming from an old white man like Joe Biden.”
He also called Biden a “very intricate part” of the legal system disenfranchising black Americans.
And said that if Biden wants to be president he needs to “really help the people that have helped Democrats all these years.”
Biden’s win in the Democratic primary was fueled primarily by his support from African American voters, particularly older ones, who revived his struggling campaign after a big win the South Carolina primary.
