Monday night President Trump tweeted he will sign an executive order temporarily suspending immigration into the US to fight against the coronavirus and to protect the jobs of American citizens.
Immigration to the United States has already been largely cut off during the crisis.
Refugee resettlement has been put on hold, visa offices are largely closed and citizenship ceremonies aren’t happening.
It’s unclear how the order will be carried out or how long the suspension could last.
So far the White House has been silent on the details.
The executive director of the National Immigration Forum pushed back against the tweet on Twitter saying “this is not about policy” and that the president sees “immigrants as the easiest to blame” despite contributions immigrants have made to the “response and recovery.”
