Even though the United States has surpassed China and Italy with the most number of coronavirus cases in the world, Italy now has the highest coronavirus death toll in the world.
The number of deaths in Italy has officially passed 10,000 with dozens of those reported deaths being doctors.
And because of social distancing that means family and friends can’t say their final farewells.
Italy has been under lockdown for almost 3 weeks.
But the damage coronavirus is wrecking on the country is astounding.
On Friday evening the 24 hour death toll was 969.
By Saturday evening authorities reported another 889 had died.
Experts say one of the reasons Italy’s death toll is so high is because of the country’s large elderly population.
It is the largest in the world behind Japan.
