US raises legal age to buy cigarettes and vapes to 21 (ASL – 12.23.19)
Transcript
A new law sets the minimum age to buy tobacco products at 21 years old.
On Friday President Trump signed that measure into law.
The measure applies to traditional tobacco products like cigarettes, and vaping devices.
Several states had already raised their ages for purchasing tobacco, but this measure mandates it nationwide.
The new law does not ban flavored e-cigarettes, which health organizations have pressured the administration for.
Health officials say raising the tobacco age to 21 is a “positive step” but the youth e-cigarette epidemic will not stop without banning flavored e-cigarettes.
A federal survey found that in that 1 in 14 12th graders, 1 in 5 10th graders and nearly 1 in 10 8th graders say they have vaped nicotine in the past month.
