On Tuesday President Trump signed an executive order that creates a task force to address the startling statistics surrounding missing or murdered American Indian and Alaska native women and girls.
According to federal studies, Native American women are killed at an alarming rate of over ten times the national average.
The new executive order is called “Operation Lady Justice.”
The task force will be headed by Attorney General William Barr and Interior Secretary David Bernhardt, and it will consist of multijurisdictional agencies including the FBI, the Justice Department, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Department of Health and Human Services.
Tribal leaders say the executive order gives hope to many families, victims and survivors and is a path for healing.
Recently Sign1News MMJ Martha Anger chatted with a Deaf woman named Sarah A. Young Bear Brown.
She is a member of the Meskwaki tribe.
She encourages people to follow and support the #MMIWG movement and explains how it has affected her directly.
For a long time now, several women have turned up missing. Even though police and federal investigators are involved in searching for the women or if a body is found, there is still no justice.
Who killed them, who is investigating what happened to them, no one has been brought to justice. Or if someone goes to trial, there is not enough evidence.
It happened in my tribe, the Meskwaki nation. A woman named Rita Papakee has been missing since 2015. No one knows where she is. The reward has grown to $30,000. Her family is still searching but still no answers.
