Democratic Congresswoman Katie Hill of California announced her resignation from Congress Sunday.
The announcement comes days after she admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with a campaign staffer before taking office.
Hill decided to step down because of how the scandal is affecting her personally and voters in her district.
In a letter from her Congressional office, Representative Hill announced her resignation by writing: “This is what needs to happen so that the good people who supported me will no longer be subjected to the pain inflicted by my abusive husband and the brutality of hateful political operatives.”
Hill says her estranged husband is part of a smear campaign built around cyber exploitation.
She says he is using private photos of personal moments as a weapon against her and she’s fearful of what might come next and how much it will hurt.
Hill is referring to private photos that were leaked and published online of her and a female campaign staffer.
Hill has admitted to an intimate relationship with the campaign staffer.
She has apologized, calling the relationship inappropriate.
A relationship between members of Congress and their staff violates House ethics rules.
But she denies a separate charge of having a relationship with her male Congressional staffer.
Hill is working with authorities to find who is distributing the private photos of her.
Per California law, the governor has two weeks to declare a date for the special election to fill Hill’s vacant seat.
