I want to thank my coanchor Jethro Wooddall for stopping by my SEL class at Atlanta Area school for the Deaf this week.
SEL stands for social emotional learning and it’s more than just learning reading, writing and math skills.
The course is designed to teach students life skills that will be a benefit for them when they graduate and for the rest of their lives.
Fields of interest include legal, medical and mental health services.
I let my students decide the topic they feel will be most beneficial for them, I narrow the list down to the top three and then I bring in leaders from the Deaf community in those fields to present to the class.
Jethro gave a wonderful presentation to the group of graduating seniors about resources that will be available to and useful for them when they graduate.
Jethro talked about certified deaf interpreters (CDI) and Deaf advocates.
There are more and more opportunities for Deaf people to become CDIs.
Requirements include having a college degree, training and taking workshops.
Gallaudet University offers CDI training.
