The executive director for the Humane Society of Grand Bahamas says she is heartbroken for the 250 dogs and 50 cats that died in the floodwaters of hurricane Dorian.
The shelter was built in 2008 with enough elevation to avoid flooding.
But no one expected the massive storm surge from Dorian.
Volunteers say they desperately tried to save the animals by keeping the crates above the rising waters.
But when the water reached their chests and the building flooded, shelter workers say they had no choice but to leave the animals and seek shelter themselves in the building’s attic.
The staff said it was agonizing to hear the animals howling and crying until it went silent.
That silence represented the death of 250 dogs and 50 cats.
Dorian also destroyed the shelter’s medical equipment, food, medicine and transport vehicles.
The shelter’s Executive Director says even though there is no way she could’ve predicted the storm’s destruction, she still feels responsible and is devastated that she could not protect the animals.
