During a hearing yesterday, prosecutors say four-year-old Abdul Wahhaj died during a religious ritual intended to cast demonic spirits from his body.
Boy’s father Saraj Wahhaj, along with four other adults, are facing child abuse charges after 11 children were found malnourished New Mexico earlier this month.
Wahhaj was also wanted in Georgia for conducting his son, who was not found with that group of children.
Prosecutors say Abdul’s body was washed several times, wrapped in sheets and buried in the same compound.
The child’s mother says he suffered from seizures.
One witness told investigators his father got the idea to stop medical care and try exercising demonic spirits instead, after visiting Saudi Arabia last year.
Monday, a judge allow all five suspects to be released on $25,000 bond until their trial.
