The urgent manhunt for a suspect accused of executing President George HW Bush’s former doctor Mark Hausknecht is over.
Joseph Pappas was found dead Friday.
Police say a tip from a Houston parks employee led them to the suspect after the employee mistook Pappas for a vandal.
The witness then found the suspect’s wallet with ID after he fled and notified police after recognizing Pappas’s name and photograph from media coverage.
When two police officers approached Pappas in a southwest Houston neighborhood, he killed himself.
The suspect had 30 years of law enforcement experience as a Texas constable and was a trained marksman.
Police say investigators also discovered an intelligence file he was keeping on Dr. Hausknecht.
The doctor’s execution took place in broad daylight last month as he was riding his bike to work.
Dashcam captured the moments before the shooting and Pappas can be seen apparently stalking the doctor on his bike too.
Investigators say Pappas planned the execution possibly as revenge for his mother’s death 20 years ago under Dr. Hausknecht’s care.
