One day after the president’s coronavirus briefing Tuesday, Trump announced he’s doubling down on sending federal agents to combat crime in major US cities.
The Trump administration is moving forward with plans to send federal agents to Chicago, where the murder rate is up 50-percent from this time last year.
The mayor of Chicago says adding federal agents is not of value if they’re “nameless” agents “riding around in vans, pulling people off the street, depriving them of their constitutional rights.”
The mayor’s comments are in reference to Trump’s recent decision to send federal agents to maintain order in Portland, Oregon.
The decision is facing backlash from mayors across the country.
Demonstrators there have been protesting racial inequality and police brutality.
Early Thursday morning Portland’s Mayor Ted Wheeler was tear gassed during protests after speaking with protesters about the presence of federal agents.
Meanwhile a Seattle man is suing Trump after he says federal officers beat him at a protest in Oregon.
We want to warn you some viewers may find these photographs disturbing.
This is what Jeff Paul claims he looked like after being confronted by federal officers on July 18.
According to the complaint Paul was protesting in downtown Portland when he says officers viciously beat him with a baton.
Paul says his First Amendment and Fourth Amendment rights were violated by the alleged attack.
He is suing Trump, the Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf and the unidentified federal agents.
Paul alleges in the suit that the president and secretary Wolf encouraged the use of force against demonstrators.
