Georgia Democrats are facing a tight deadline to select the candidate to take the late John Lewis’ congressional seat.
The civil rights icon passed away late Friday after a fight with pancreatic cancer.
Under Georgia law, the party is to inform the Georgia Secretary of State’s office whether they intend to appoint a replacement by today Monday.
Democrats are now looking at 131 candidates who are interested in being the party’s nominee in November for the 5th congressional district.
The nominating committee includes former State House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams and Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.
Whomever the Democrats pick will face Republican Angela Stanton-King, a criminal justice reform advocate and former reality star, in the November general election.
