Scientists at Florida Atlantic University used a mannequin head, manual pump and smoke generator to show how far droplets from an uncovered cough or sneeze travels.
They are experimenting with different DIY masks to find out which ones offer the best protection to help stop the spread of Covid 19.
Here’s what they found out: droplets from an uncovered cough or sneeze were able to travel more than 8 feet.
Droplets from a bandana-covered cough traveled 3 feet.
Droplets from a folded cotton handkerchief traveled 1’3″.
And with the cone style masks, they traveled about 8 inches.
Stitched-quilting fabric masks were the most effective with droplets traveling 2.5 inches.
The researchers say their hope is that through visualization, the study will help people understand the rationale behind recommendations for social distancing and using face masks.
