Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, who is accused of kneeling on George Floyd’s neck for almost nine minutes before he died, will make his first court appearance virtually Monday afternoon.
He’s been charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.
The second-degree murder charge carries a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.
The other three officers involved in Floyd’s death are accused of aiding and abetting Chauvin.
The killing of Floyd continues to prompt protesters across the country.
Monday a public memorial service will be held for Floyd in Houston where he grew up.
He will be buried next to his mother.
Also Monday presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden will meet with Floyd’s family privately in Houston and offer his condolences.
