On Friday the National Hurricane Center said the large storm brewing in the Atlantic Ocean right now could be become the first named storm of the year.
Well it’s happened.
The National Hurricane Center has upgraded the tropical depression into tropical storm Arthur.
The storm remains well offshore of the East Coast of Florida and Georgia but continues to move north.
Arthur is expected to move near or east off the coast of North Carolina by Monday.
A tropical storm watch remains in effect for portions of that state.
Two US Air Force reserve hurricane hunter aircraft are scheduled to investigate the system on Sunday to determine how organized the storm is and whether or not it is intensifying.
This is the sixth consecutive year that a named storm has formed earlier than June 1, which is the official start to hurricane season in the Atlantic Ocean.
