From the coronavirus pandemic to murder hornets, the hits just keep coming in 2020.
Now dozens of weather experts are in agreement that the upcoming hurricane season could be a very busy one.
Hurricane season officially starts June 1.
During an average hurricane season you can expect to see roughly 6 hurricanes and 12 named storms.
This year the consensus among the experts is that we will be in for eight hurricanes and 17 named storms.
One reason for the increased risk is a fact that sea surface temperatures have been much warmer than normal.
Meteorologists say the warmer the ocean, the more fuel available for the storms to tap into.
Here’s the good news.
Experts say it is possible to have an active hurricane season and nothing hits the US coast.
The most recent example is 2010 when 12 hurricanes formed in the Atlantic Ocean and none of them made landfall in the US.
