The Justice Department is dropping the criminal case against President Trump’s first national security adviser Michael Flynn.
Flynn is accused of lying about his contact with Russia which prompted Trump to fire him three years ago.
Special counsel Robert Mueller convinced him to coordinate in the Russia investigation.
The request to drop the case was filed with a federal judge in DC District Court on Thursday.
The court must still formally approved the DOJ’s request.
In its filing, the Justice Department condemned the FBI’s work when it interviewed Flynn in the first weeks of the Trump presidency.
The Justice Department also said it cannot prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Flynn lied or that if he did, the lies were substantial.
When asked about the DOJ’s decision, President Trump said Flynn was an innocent man targeted by the Obama administration to try and taken down as president.
He went on to say “I hope a lot of people are going to pay a big price because they are dishonest crooked people. They are scum. They are human scum.”
