As the numbers continue to climb, several state and city officials are expected to announce plans to reopen their economies this week and some already have.
Researchers across the country are working to find effective methods to fight the virus.
Top medical experts say increased testing is still the most promising strategy to get people and economies up and rolling.
On Saturday the nation’s top infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci said the country is testing about 1.5 million to 2 million people per week and should double its efforts over the next several weeks.
Meanwhile hospitals in New York are studying a common heartburn drug to see if it could be effective against COVID-19.
And preliminary results from a much-discussed experimental antiviral drug, remdesivir, could be released in the next two weeks.
