Several states have announced plans to begin lifting social distancing measures over the next few weeks.
But those plans don’t appear to include the 38.6 million public school students in the country.
According to a CNN tally of school closures, 42 states as well as Washington, DC have issued orders that will keep schools closed and students at home for the rest of the academic year to help reduce the spread of the novel coronavirus.
The other states – California, Idaho, South Dakota, Tennessee, Kentucky, Maine, – have only recommended that local school officials continue supporting students through distance learning models.
Montana’s governor has given school districts the option to begin in-class learning as early as May 7.
As for college-bound students, the traditional May 1 enrollment deadline is fast approaching.
However almost 400 colleges and universities have pushed back decision day by at least a month.
The American Council on Education (ACE) predicts enrollment nationwide will drop 15%, including a decline of 25% for international students, costing institutions $23 billion in revenue.
