Britons spending time less time outdoors as a result of the coronavirus pandemic have been urged to take vitamin D supplements to protect their health.
A chief nutritionist at Public Health England said that people may not be getting all the vitamin D they need from sunlight during lockdown.
The nutritionist says that people should consider taking a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D to protect their bone and muscle health.
A lack of vitamin D can lead to bone deformities.
However the nutritionist stressed that there is not enough evidence to support recommending vitamin D for reducing the risk of COVID-19.
Previously health officials had advised people to take vitamin D supplements during fall and winter.
Good natural sources of vitamin D include oily fish, red meat, egg yolks and foods like some breakfast cereals.
