On Sunday the nation’s top infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci said the US could face a second wave of coronavirus infections in the fall.
But Fauci says that hopefully the country would be prepared to “respond to the rebound in a much more effective way.”
In an interview with CNN anchor Jake Tapper, Fauci was asked if he thinks it will be safe in November for voters to physically go to vote at the polls.
Fauci says he hopes so but he can’t guarantee it.
Meanwhile on Sunday in Virginia the governor established Election Day as a state holiday, giving voters the day off to vote and expanded early voting.
The new legislation will remove the requirement that voters show a photo ID prior to casting a ballot and extends early voting to 45 days before an election.
Election Day is also a civic holiday in Delaware, Hawaii, Kentucky and New York.
Several states have also expanded their absentee voting allowances and some have even called for full mail-in voting amid the pandemic.
Democrats want to give states more funding for mail-in voting efforts.
And they want the initiative included in the next coronavirus stimulus package to address the dangers voters face going to the polls.
But President Trump and Congressional Republicans are rejecting the idea claiming that mail-in voting would jeopardize the integrity of elections.
