Sign1News is also celebrating Deaf Heritage Month.
Every year from March 13 through April 15 the nation honors Deaf history and recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to Deaf culture.
Today March 13 marks the 32nd anniversary of the infamous 1988 Deaf President Now protest.
It started on the campus of Gallaudet University but quickly became a national movement.
It was a defining moment in Deaf history and also the moment Amy Cohen Efron found her voice and identity as a Deaf activist.
That’s her face on the front line of the protest.
Sign1News MMJ Martha Anger caught up with Amy recently to reminisce about her early days as a protester, to discuss the impact of the DPN protest and how she is still protesting today but in a different yet still powerful way.
Thank you.
