On Monday federal prosecutors announced that 27 people involved in the horse racing industry have been indicted for taking part in a scheme to give racehorses performance-enhancing drugs.
The drugs were given to help them win races around the world.
The people indicted include horse trainers, veterinarians and drug distributors.
Prosecutors say the drugs and their effects led horses to injury, illness and, in some cases, death.
Some involved in the scheme allegedly were tasked with getting rid of dead animals without properly reporting them.
Prosecutors say among those horses given performance-enhancing drugs was American racehorse Maximum Security.
At last year’s Kentucky Derby Maximum Security crossed the finish line first but was disqualified for impeding the path of other horses.
Prosecutors say Maximum Security’s trainer, Jason Servis, “doped virtually all horses under his control.”
And just to give an idea of how much money is at stake with this scheme, last month Maximum Security won $10 million in the inaugural Saudi Cup.
