The CDC is issuing a warning for people who might be considering getting a puppy for Christmas from a pet store.
While puppies usually bring joy, warm feelings and the need to snuggle, the CDC says they may also be responsible for a recent outbreak of a multidrug resistant infection.
According to the CDC at least thirty people in thirteen states have been affected with Campylobacter Jejuni.
Twenty-four patients were interviewed and twenty-one reported having contact with puppies, fifteen specifically from a pet store.
The CDC has not been able to pin down a specific puppy supplier.
The infection is typically associated with food poisoning, causing symptoms like diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps within 2 to 5 days of exposure.
Most people recover on their own within a week.
Keep yourself healthy by washing your hands before and after handling puppies and their food or cleaning up after them.
And when welcoming a new dog into the home, make sure you take it to the vet for a checkup within the first week.
Remember just because an animal looks healthy doesn’t mean you can’t get sick.
