In a historic move, the House Judiciary Committee voted to approve two articles of impeachment against President Trump: one article for abuse of power and one article for obstruction of Congress.
For fourteen hours Thursday night, Democrats offering evidence to support impeachment sparred back and forth with Republicans arguing against impeachment.
Democrats accused Republicans of trying to push the impeachment debate longer than necessary in an attempt to hold a final vote in the middle of the night.
As a result, Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler abruptly halted the hearing and pushed the official vote to Friday morning so the public would be able to watch.
It took less than ten minutes for the articles of impeachment to pass just a little past 10 AM Friday morning, with 23 voting for impeachment, 17 voting against.
Nadler called it “a solemn and sad day.”
This now sets the stage for a vote in the House.
Trump responded by repeating his claim that the impeachment is a “witchhunt” and a “sham.”
He also said he would prefer a longer impeachment process in the Senate because more witnesses can be called and he “would like to see the whistleblower, who is a fraud.”
