A 16-year-old white high school student is in custody in Gainesville, Georgia for allegedly planning an attack on a historically black church.
Police say the girl had been planning to attack Bethel AME Church for weeks.
They say that she went so far as to show up at the church armed with butcher knives, with the intent of carrying out a knife attack on a small group of members of the church.
But when she arrived no one was there.
It was on Friday that an alert student at Gainesville High School overheard the girl’s plans on the attack and notified a school resource officer who called police.
The girl was then taken into custody.
At a press conference the police chief in Gainesville called the girl “a racist.”
The girl is being charged with criminal intent to commit murder, though authorities are considering on whether or not to charge her as an adult.
