On Friday President Trump signed into law the Hidden Figures Congressional gold medals.
It is the highest civilian award in the US.
The four African-American women known as the “hidden figures” who worked at NASA during the race to space in the 1960s are being awarded the medals.
They are engineers Christine Darden and Mary Jackson as well as mathematician Katherine Johnson and computer programmer Dorothy Vaughan.
The women were called “human computers” and they did the complex calculations at NASA that made space travel possible.
Democratic Senator Kamala Harris was one of the people who introduced the bipartisan bill and called the women “pioneers” and an inspiration to black women all across the US.
A fifty gold medals was granted in honor of all women who contributed to NASA during the space race.
