Authorities say American Airlines mechanic Abdul Majeed Marouf Ahmed Alani is accused of trying to sabotage a passenger plane shortly after takeoff.
The plane was supposed to fly from Miami international Airport to the Bahamas in July with 150 people on board.
Authorities say Alani sabotaged an instrument that reported the craft’s speed, pitch and other important data.
The plane never took off and no one was hurt.
Alani admitted he damaged the instrument but said he didn’t want to hurt anyone.
He told investigators he was angry over a union contract dispute with the company that had impacted him financially.
He has been charged in federal court with willfully damaging, destroying, disabling or wrecking an aircraft.
Assistant US Attorney Maria Medetis says Alani has been suspended without pay.
The government has until September 20 to formally indict him.
