More than half of the people who were killed were not in the car that actually ran the red light but in the car that was hit by the red light runner.
The reason why more people are running red lights is not known but one in three Americans admitted to doing so in the thirty days before the survey was conducted.
AAA suggests more cars on the road and drivers distracted by smart phones could be the factors.
The group also says red light cameras and roundabouts instead of intersections could decrease the death rate.
