Contact lenses have long offered dozens of benefits for near and far sighted folks.
But getting complacent when it comes to contact care can lead to eye infections or worse.
That’s why the CDC has declared this “Contact Lens Health Week” and has provided these do’s and don’ts to help protect your eyes.
The biggest no-no: don’t sleep with your contacts on.
Doctor say the cornea needs oxygen.
When you close your eyes at night, less air gets through because eyelids are close.
By adding a piece of plastic on top of the cornea means less oxygen gets through.
Do wash your hands with soap and water before handling your contact but don’t let water touch the lens.
Tap, pool or lake water can lead to serious eye infections.
Do replace contacts as often as your doctor recommends.
Don’t mix fresh contact lens solution with old or used solution.
The potential for bacterial contamination grows every day.
And despite what you might’ve heard DO NOT use saliva in place of solution.
Doctor say there is a tremendous amount of bacteria in the mouth that can be horrifically dangerous if it gets into the eyes.
One final “do” for you.
Do always carry a backup pair of glasses with a current prescription.
