Jury selection begins today for Michael Drejka who was accused of fatally shooting an unarmed man outside of a Florida convenience store.
Prosecutors and defense attorneys will start the week weeding through hundreds of Pinellas County residents.
They are looking for six jurors to decide if Drejka was justifiably threatened when he fatally shot Marqeis McGlocklin in 2018.
Detectives say Drejka opened fire after McGlocklin shoved him into the ground for confronting his girlfriend.
Drejka maintains that he was acting in self-defense.
Jurors will be shown surveillance video of the shooting including a slow-motion version the prosecution says shows McGlocklin retreating.
Drejka’s defense will argue that he didn’t have the luxury of slow-motion when he made the split-second decision.
Attorneys expect finding a jury could be difficult.
The high profile case made national headlines and sparked debate over Florida’s Stand Your Ground law.
The six jurors will need to reach an unanimous decision.
