Six months after the Parkland massacre, students are back in class at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school.
The first thing students will notice is increased security.
More than 50 cameras have been installed on campus, there are now 18 security personnel, three are Sheriff’s deputies and students are using a new single point of entry as they arrive for class.
There is additional fencing around the property and the doors on the classroom now lock automatically.
Administrators also say they have significantly increased the number of mental health counselors, social workers, behavior specialists and threat assessment teams.
In the wake of the February massacre, Florida lawmakers passed a measure that addresses emotional struggles facing students.
Among other things, the bill provides extra funding for mental health services.
