On Monday a federal judge said former White House counsel Don McGahn must testify before the U.S. House in its impeachment probe.
In the judge’s ruling she said “presidents are not kings” and high-ranking officials are not immune and must testify when the law requires them to do so.
McGahn and others have said they don’t need to comply with congressional calls to testify because they have blanket immunity as White House officials.
The House Judiciary Committee has been trying to force McGahn to testify since April.
Lawmakers want to speak to McGahn about the president’s alleged attempts to obstruct the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
The judge said McGahn can refuse to answer questions.
But the ruling itself could open the door for other resistant officials to testify or even President Trump himself if more judges agree with Monday’s ruling.
The justice department says it plans to appeal the ruling in the McGahn case.
