The Trump administration acknowledges that its proposed changes to the food-stamp program could leave nearly half a million children without access to free school lunches.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture released its analysis.
The proposed rule was unveiled in July.
Children automatically qualify for free lunches if the families receive food stamps.
But the Trump administration has proposed limiting eligibility for food stamps.
The administration argues it needs to close a “loophole” in the food stamp program.
The loophole they claim allows some people with somewhat higher incomes and savings to get benefits that the administration argues they don’t deserve.
Consumer advocates, however, say that the option helps low-income working Americans get the help they need.
