On Thursday U.S. ambassador to the European Union, Gordon Sondland, is expected to testify in front of two congressional committees leading the impeachment inquiry.
Sondland will speak to the House Intelligence and Foreign Affairs and Oversight Committees behind closed doors.
Last week, House Democrats subpoenaed Sondland after the State Department blocked him from speaking to investigators.
Sondland is seen as a key witness for Democrats primarily because of text messages text message conversations he had with Ukraine ambassador Bill Taylor.
Those text messages debate whether 400 million dollars in military aid to Ukraine was being withheld by President Trump.
The whistleblower report at the center of inquiry alleges Trump used those funds as leverage to pressure Ukraine’s president to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son.
According to sources, Sondland says he never understood Trump wanted the Bidens investigated.
