Last week a civil rights group, which includes the NAACP and the Anti-Defamation League, launched and an ad boycott against Facebook for the month of July.
The #StopHateForProfit campaign was launched over claims that Facebook doesn’t do enough to stop the spread of hate on its platform.
Ben and Jerry’s, Coca-Cola, Hershey’s, Honda, Levi Straus, and Verizon are just some of the few large companies that committed to pulling advertising from the platform.
Also on Sunday Starbucks announced it is pausing all social media advertising on the platform for now.
It did not explicitly link its decision to the #StopHateForProfit campaign or say if it was formally joining the effort.
Starbucks’ decision put a particular financial pressure on Facebook.
Last year Starbucks spent nearly 95-million dollars in Facebook advertising.
Starbucks says the move is happening as the coffee giant is holding internal discussions about stopping hate speech.
