Space force launches its first mission Saturday
Transcript
If weather permits, this space plane from the newly formed US Space Force is scheduled to take off for its first mission on Saturday.
It’s called an X-37 B-orbital test vehicle and it’s on a secret mission.
Clearly we know when it’s supposed to head to the final frontier.
Takeoff is scheduled for 8:24 Eastern time.
We know what it will be carrying: a satellite built by cadets from the US Air Force Academy, which will have five experimental payloads.
And we know why it is launching: it’s all in an effort to demonstrate technologies in space.
Really the only big secret is whether the weather will cooperate.
Air Force weather officers say there is a 40% chance the weather will hold up for the big launch.
As for doing all of this during the coronavirus pandemic, officials with the Space Force say the mission has been quote “deemed critical to perform during this pandemic.”
