Wednesday Education Secretary Betsy announced new protections for those accused of sexual harassment and assault on college campuses.
Starting this August schools around the country will have a new set of rules for handling sexual misconduct cases.
These new regulations are part of Title IX which prohibits sex discrimination in education.
One of the provisions here gives the accused a chance to cross-examine accusers.
The new rule also narrows the definition of sexual misconduct on campuses.
DeVos says the goal is to strike a balance that’s more fair to everyone involved from survivors to the accused.
And that the previous guidance denied due process to the accused.
But critics worry the highly controversial new rules will keep victims from coming forward.
The National Women’s Law Center says it plans to sue the education department over the changes.
