New York has become the first state to cancel its primary election over coronavirus fears.
The New York State Board of Elections voted to cancel its Democratic primary that was scheduled for June 23.
Earlier this month Senator Bernie Sanders suspended his campaign.
The Democratic commissioners on the board voted to remove a number of candidates who had ended their presidential campaigns from the ballot.
That resulted in the cancellation of the primary because former Vice President Joe Biden was uncontested.
The board of elections Democratic cochair said holding the vote would not be a good idea when people need to practice social distancing.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said it was a tough decision for the state’s board of elections and he is not going to second guess their decision.
The decision to cancel New York’s Democratic presidential primary will not impact primaries for congressional, state-level and local races, which will be held the same day and largely conducted through absentee ballot.
