Scotland may soon become the first country in the world to make all menstrual hygiene products free.
Earlier this week Scottish Parliament approved the first stage of the plan.
The plan would make tampons and pads completely free for those in need and help end “period poverty.”
According to a study by a humanitarian organization, sanitary products are considered a luxury item in Scotland and many girls are unable to afford them.
Period poverty means those who menstruate are subject to reproductive and urinary tract infections and it hinders them from enjoying basic activities like going to school.
Today all parties back the period products free provision bill.
The government is now expected to make amendments and address the big concern: the cost.
The initiative could cost more than 24 million pounds or $31 million US annually.
